The room gets quiet.
We are at an inflection point in AI governance. The era of aspirational language — "We are committed to responsible AI," "We prioritize transparency," "Ethics is at the core of everything we do" — is over. Regulators have mandates. Enterprise procurement teams have questionnaires. And the organizations that can answer with documented evidence, third-party certification, and auditable controls will win contracts, pass audits, and avoid enforcement actions. The ones that can't will lose on all three fronts.

You must document what AI systems you deploy, the context in which they operate, and who the interested parties are — customers, employees, regulators, affected communities. This forces organizations to actually inventory their AI use rather than assume they know what's running.

A common response I hear is: "We'll build this out when we need to." I understand the impulse — governance infrastructure takes time and investment. But the timeline for "when we need to" has already arrived in several sectors.
The EU AI Act's prohibitions on unacceptable-risk AI systems became applicable on February 2, 2025. Obligations for general-purpose AI model providers apply from August 2, 2025. Requirements for high-risk AI systems in Annex III — covering employment, education, credit, biometrics, and critical infrastructure — apply from August 2, 2026. That's not far away, and conformity assessments take time to prepare for.
